Ivan Ortiz Rodriguez
Data Science Ph.D. Student (Cycle 34)
Bio:
Iván Ortiz-Rodríguez, born in Mexico City in 1991, is an Environmental Scientist and Master in Biological Sciences who graduated from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (Mexico). As a graduate in Environmental Sciences Ivan was trained with a comprehensive and critical vision that allowed him to approach the study of socio-ecological systems considering not only its components, but the interactions that emerge from them, covering different scales, dimensions, and themes; and promoting the dialogue between different sectors and disciplines based on the construction of common conceptual frameworks. Later, in his Master's degree in Biological Sciences, he had the opportunity to explore -using experimental, empirical, and demographic modelling approaches- the long-term effects of human disturbances on biodiversity conservation and ecosystem functioning inside a tropical rainforest reserve. From 2015 to 2018 Ivan served as the manager of the Mexican Network for Socioecosystems and Sustainability, in this experience he had the opportunity to work closely towards the co-construction of a common agenda between research and policy design through the development of several workshops with members from both spheres.
In his current research work, Iván is exploring how Machine Learning algorithms can help to identify the non-linear relationships among the different components inside Natural Protected Areas towards the optimization of these relationships for the conservation of biodiversity and ecosystem services.
Research Interest:
Ivan is interested in the application of Machine Learning and Data Mining tools for the understanding of complex relationships in the study of ecosystems and socio-ecosystems. Previously, he has been developed academically in the study of the dynamics of populations and communities of tropical plants for their conservation and sustainable use.
